I agree that Hindu interpretations of death do differ in various parts of India. In fact, all that you mentioned is exactly what I have read before. However, your mention about becoming one with god/creator would be the answer to how a soul gets liberated from the Karmic cycle. Since I wanted to make this piece focused on the concept of death, I skipped including this point. But I surely will include it in my next story.
